Program Launch and Reception for the York University Syria Response and Refugee Initiative (2:00-3:00pm).

Strengthened by the contributions to campus life of refugees from prior refugee arrivals, and long active in related fields of study, the York University community is deeply affected by the global refugee crisis. York is taking a coordinated, multifaceted approach to respond as its students, faculty, staff, alumni and donors rally their efforts to support refugees and their families. In this context the University has launched the Syria Response and Refugee Initiative, with support from Osgoode Hall Law School, housed in and strongly supported by York’s Centre for Refugee Studies which seeks to highlight and support these efforts.

These include the University’s participation in the GTA area wide Lifeline Syria Challenge to form campus-based groups to sponsor Syrian refugees- where six York sponsorship teams have already been formed and more are being actively sought- as well as an increased commitment to refugee sponsorship through York’s Glendon and Keele Campus World University Service of Canada (WUSC) Committees. It also includes facilitating ways the community can support refugee students at the University.

This reception will launch the initiative, unveil the project’s website and hold a reception for attendees, members of sponsorship teams to date and those interested in potentially forming sponsor teams and learning more about the overall initiative. Light refreshments will be provided.

Please RSVP at

The reception will be preceded by a Lifeline Syria Challenge at York Refugee Sponsorship Information Session (12:30-2:00pm)
