York University’s Refugees Welcome Here! Campaign (supported by its Syria Response and Refugee Initiative-SRRI at the Centre for Refugee Studies & member student groups) and the U of Mosaic Fellows at York are hosting a day of collaboration, discussion, education and leadership training for newcomer youth and allies to mobilize for social change.

York U student leaders will facilitate discussions on key challenges facing newcomer youth who will develop civic action plans to address these issues. The event also features talks and engagement with:

City of Toronto Councilor and Newcomer Advocate Joe Mihevc

York U Syria Response & Refugee Initiative Project Lead John Carlaw

Participants will also be invited to join the Canadian Council for Refugees’ National Youth Network and York U’s Refugees Welcome Here! campaign.

Collaborating York U Refugees Welcome Here! student groups in this event to date also include Refugee Health Outreach, the Canadian Arab Institute- York U Student Ambassador, and the Psychology Graduate Student Refugee Initiative.

Is there a limit to how many participants may attend?

While we do not expect to cap attendance, in the event interest exceeds our available space we ask those that wish to attend to RSVP as early as possible to assist in planning the event, to reserve their spot and in the case we reach the event attendance limit. The participation of newcomer youth will be prioritized during the event and also if interest in the event exceeds the size of our room booking. The exact location of the event will be sent to those who RSVP in advance.
